“Who did the police shoot today?” thread
« on: September 22, 2020, 01:08:25 pm »
What do you do if you have a mentally challenged 13 year old who isn’t a threat to anyone?  Well, if you’re the cops, you barge in there and treat him like a threat...  then shoot him.

That is pretty pathetic.  Maybe BLM can result in change that protects more than just black or brown people.

Police aren't actually supposed to kill people, even if they're criminals; this seems to have been forgotten.

Breonna Taylor goes to her grave, cops in America get away with murder again. I'm sure donny will approve. Oh yeah, there's that skin color thingy. I wonder why he went from white to orange.

You should definitely have the same 'cop talk' with them that a black parent has with their kid and for the very same reason.  That's what we did.  BLM has it's place in the scheme of things but it would be better if their focus could expand to include everyone.  I think what's most systemic these days is reactionary authoritarianism.  Everywhere you look in the world these days governments seem to be squaring off against their people with most cops dressed up like the Empire's Storm Troopers.

I get no sense of that here. More often than not, demonstrators get away with more than they should.
BLM is about some lives mattering more than others and that is a fact.

That's a silly statement.  It is a fact that black people get shot disproportionately (in USofA)...   so it's not a case of their lives being worth more, but they would like the same value placed on their lives as white folks' lives.

The mentally ill are shot more disproportionately too.  Diabetics as well can be so affected by insulin shock to be mistaken as out of control violent drunks.

Getting rid of cops is stupid, that said either train cops to essentially be psychological paramedics or better yet instead of partnering two cops together on their beat partner a cop with a paramedic and make that the standard for community policing.

How did you come to the conclusion I think black lives were worth more?

Quite a few police are taking paramedic training these days. It is offered in our town.

I sure hope this training places a lot of emphasis on psychiatric assessment.  What did you think of teaming psychiatrists up with police on beat?  I would think there should be room for at least one of these per precinct/small town and more in big cities. Perhaps a few key questions from a 9/11 dispatcher could trigger the dispatch of such a team.

I agree, I also think my sense that it's actually systemic authoritarianism we're looking at is an opinion too. I think it might be one that's perhaps more focused and closer to the actual reality.  It's natural that minorities and marginalized people would feel its effects worse as is the case with victims of COVID and probably most other diseases too. But of course like a disease we know full well mal-governance affects everyone.

I don’t know about roaming psych evaluations for cops, but I do think every patrol or call-out should have a social worker going along with the cops.

Well if it is not about other lives mattering more than black lives, what is it about?
Do you not agree that is the case, particularly in the US?

No, it is mostly about first response physical traumas. I doubt you would find many cops who would object to having access to psychiatrists on many of their calls.

PS You live in RCMP land I believe. They are a different culture.
