Technically you don't need an ID to vote.

You could vote if there is another registered voter with you who is willing to vouch for your identity.

(There are rules... usually one voter can only vouch for one other, and they must be going to the same polling station. Still, it does give more people the ability to vote even if they don't have proper ID.)

Yes I am aware of how that system works and to me the voter vouching system is simply another form of ID. I was also pointing out that I know I can head over to my local liquor store for a bottle of wine and all I have to show there is the method of payment.

Just a quick sidebar to that, I was flying through Chicago (O'Hare) one time and had an hour or so to kill between flights. I felt like a quick snack and so of course Chicago pizza came to mind. Found a food court counter to get a slice and right next to it was a bar counter with stools so I asked the girl behind that counter if I could sit and have a glass of wine with my pizza. She said of course but that she would need to see some ID first. As I reached for my wallet I asked her how old do you have to be to drink in Chicago? The age was 18 I think but she explained there was a regulation which disallowed her from assuming I was (well) over the age of 18 as that would be a type of "profiling".
