Quote
Republican U.S. Senate candidate for Missouri Courtland Sykes blasted “women’s rights” this week.

In a statement posted to Facebook on Tuesday, Sykes said that he had been asked if he “supports women’s rights.”

“I want to come home to a home cooked dinner every night at six,” Sykes said

Good job, Courtland.  Will he win again I wonder ?

I come home to a cooked dinner every night.  I cook them on the weekends, and warm them up when I get home.

But then, I'm not a Senator.

I can’t really say that his preference for a stay-at-home wife who makes him dinner every night is something that means he’s against women’s rights....     If he can find a willing partner, so be it.  Old fashioned maybe...

it’s probably all his other opinions, like being anti-choice that make him against women’s rights.

But you can get more opposition to women's rights if that means eating uncooked food at irregular hours.

My father opposed women's rights and ended up with poorly prepared meals at irregular hours. No doubt that is an outlier to the normal experience of opposition to women's rights resulting in fine meals at regular times!

Some families choose to have a life where one spouse does not work outside the home and their job becomes keeping the household running which would include cooking. If can be a mutually beneficial arrangement if both parties choose it. I would not call it old fashioned - just a pragmatic division of responsibilities based on the earning power of the individuals involved.

1. Some families choose ...

2. If can be a mutually beneficial arrangement if both parties choose it.

Both of these are collaborative family decisions, not unilateral "I WANT" statements.

Good for you.

Neither is this guy. Guess he thinks this will get him elected.

I guess you did not notice that there was no reference to gender in my post. All I did was state what should be an obvious fact of economics: people specialize and there is nothing inherently wrong with people making choices that make economic sense to them. The sneering judgements of people with preconceived notions of how to divide the tasks of running of a household are unhelpful.

Women's rights should be seen in context.  Women were slaves inside the home before?  Well kinda but not quite.  Today people have 1 or 2 or no babies.  Pre-contraceptive pill, for tens of thousands of years men be like "let's ****" so women would have 5 or 9 or 11 babies.  You can't work when you have 5 or 7 or 19 babies, and putting that many kids in daycare would eat all the money the woman would make outside the home anyways.

And before the modern information age & before a world of HR managers, marketing execs, web designers etc. a lot more westerners did thing more physically demanding jobs like farming, coal mining, masonry, & general hauling-heavy-crap-around etc. so the man was more suited for that stuff, & women had milk-producing breasts and baby-producing vaginas so they were the ones who stayed home.

Then came WWII & women be like "hey fellas are gone & i'm making my own money & not cleaning up child turds all day I like this" but then fellas came back & women went back into the home & they be like "uhh WTF", so the 60's roll around & times-are-a-changin' & the pill comes out & women be like "I don't want babies every time we ****" so then pow women are now working & not having many babies, immigration is needed to make up for declining populations, & the West has been slowly but dramatically morphing ever since.
