When the Judge Became the Defendant -
Judge Shelley Joseph, charged with obstruction of justice and accused of helping an undocumented immigrant escape detention, has signaled she will risk a trial.

Massachusetts has taken the forefront in the "Sanctuary States" and "Sanctuary Cities" movement. This movement, in shorthand terms, has decided that the rights of undocumented residents "trumps" Federal Law. New York provides legal assistance to illegal immigrants to help them defy and disobey Federal law. See Immigrant Protection - New York Legal Assistance. Other states provide similar assistance.

This judge, Judge Shelley Joseph surreptitiously arranged for an illegal resident to slip out the back door, and shut down the sound recording equipment in an attempt to cover up the activity.

Quote from: Linked New York Times article
In April, she and a court officer, Wesley MacGregor, were accused of allowing an immigrant to evade detention by arranging for him to sneak out the back door of a courthouse.
The federal prosecutor in Boston took the highly unusual step of charging the judge with obstruction of justice, setting off a debate over whether and how states can refrain from carrying out President Trump’s immigration policy.

Now mind you, these state governments are not overflowing with money for their basic functions. The very state courthouses in which Judge Shelley Joseph administer "justice" suffer severe financial constraints. Roads are crumbling.

Yet funding is available to for the "Trump resistance." Last time nullification was tried in the U.S., in 1832 for South Carolina it didn't end well. The ultimate "nullification" of Federal authority, in 1860 starting with South Carolina and ending at Appomattox in April 1865 ended disastrously. As a taxpayer, I am tired of funding these partisan pity parties.

People who break the law should be punished according to the law.  Immigration laws are the only laws people can break where others feel sorry for the criminal.

Helping illegal migrants is fine and just as long as you're not breaking the law.

How many contradictions did we just hear there? ha, ha.
I suspect the one major immigration law breaker in the US is the current POTUS.

A humorous response, if not an actually useful one.

I talked to an ICE officer and he claims that sanctuary cities are really something made up by politicians in the U.S. If the government wants to deport someone, he said, no local or state government can do anything about it.

From what I understand, a "sanctuary city" is one that does not co-operate with ICE. They don't inform ICE when they come across someone that doesn't have documentation. Yes, the government can deport someone but they need to find them.

Apparently there's more to it than that...there are plenty of ways for ICE to find illegals living anywhere.

What the "sanctuary city" can do is refuse to cooperate in locating the alleged illegal.

That is often easier said than done. The kind of cooperation ICE would want would be to hold a person after, say, a traffic stop, a drug bust or any other minor infraction.
