So amend the Constitution. You can't tell me that you can compare Elections Canada to what goes on south of the border, and with that comparison, think they're doing a good job.
Amending the constitution is always easier said than done. I doubt states want to give up power to the central government. It's an antiquated system, but i suppose as long as the rules are stated and they are fair and followed that's what counts. Since laws/rules vary from state to state it can cause a bit of confusion, which is probably the biggest drawback.
This is a system where the states elect the POTUS. Again antiquated, it's not 13 independent colonies forming a protective union anymore/
