Seems unfair to me, but what do you suppose would have happened if the billionaire was black and the homeless man white?

I would have gone with Ethan Couch, "the Affluenza Teen", as exhibit A for this thread. I can't think of a better example of a white guy literally getting away with murder by virtue of privilege.

Regardless, I'm skeptical that race is the key factor.  I think it's more likely about wealth, privilege, and connectedness. Obviously the great majority of those who are wealthy, privileged, and connected happen to be white, but I don't think it's race in itself that lets wealthy white people off the hook in situations where a minority person would be doing jail time.  Consider cases where black college athletes have been shielded from consequences because they score lots of touchdowns.  Wealth and influence might be sources of privilege, but they aren't the only source.

I gather that statistics indicate that even in cases of comparable severity a black person is likely to see harsher charges and longer sentences. That might well be true. I don't dispute that some degree of racism is at work.  I just think that trying to make the conversation strictly about race and ignoring other key factors misses the mark.

First, they're in different states with different judges. Second, the black guy is a repeat offender and got dragged into the state's habitual offender rules which specific mandatory long sentences. Third the first guy is rich so can afford a top notch lawyer (can you say OJ Simpson) and was able to plead being crazy and get treatment.

I don't think race plays a huge part in sentencing except insofar as more blacks will be poor, more of them will be convicted of violence and other serious crimes, and more will be repeat offenders with little education and no job prospects. Such people - of whatever race - always get harsher sentences.

How many Black billionaires do you think there are in the US? Give you a hint, you could tote them up on one hand and not use up all your fingers.

Up to 4 then, or do you not count thumbs?

That being fully understood, what do you suppose would have happened if the billionaire was black and the homeless man white?

C'mon now, what do you think? How much lawyer can you buy with a billion dollars?" Even if they're "Black" dollars.

But that was exactly my point.   What on Earth was yours?

Sometimes I think some people just have to take a contrary position based purely on identity.

Ask OJ Simpson.

The same thing ?

Not necessarily.  Some ratio of money and race is involved.  I don't know what that ratio would be, but you do, apparently.

Yeah, I actually think this is about money more than race but race will play into it under those terms anyway.

But I am expecting a #metoo2 soon and also that I will be swinging over to the right, relatively speaking.  That's because the mob will be rising soon and we'll need to call for calm.

I addressed it above.

The point of the OP is quite clear.

So was mine.  I still don't know what yours was.
