Brian Pallister's Race War
« on: February 01, 2017, 09:04:50 pm »
A few weeks ago, Brian Pallister made some comments that upset the indigenous population in Manitoba.  He said that issues around night hunting and the killing of livestock by indigenous hunters was creating a race war in Manitoba.

I disagree with the Premier's choice of words, but not the general idea - night hunting is dangerous and is causing destruction to livestock.  Something measured and legal needs to be done.

He felt he needed to say something and unfortunately going after First Nations hierarchy results in being labelled a racist without evidence which is a tactic to shut down discussion on various topics.

Yeah.  I just wish he would have picked his words more carefully on this.  There is a lot of night hunting around our area Blueblood.  Just by thinking about it you realize how dangerous that is/would be.  I'm not sure what the judge was thinking when he allowed it all those years ago.  It really does need to be addressed before it moves from destruction of property to unintentional homicide.

It's dangerous but try selling that to chiefs who have to be elected and have to show their constituents that they wield some kind of power and will go to bat for them.  It's the same reason why massive projects have such a hard time getting started...

There is no wildlife population anywhere that can withstand even a small number of people with rifles, gps, trucks, snowmobiles, power boats, gill nets, etc. who can harvest as much as they like.  The eco system does not care about whatever rights you think you have and the impacts of this attitude is showing up all over the country.  But you can't say anything, cuz you'll be branded a racist instantly.  I have personally seen three different wildlife populations in three completely different parts of the country decimated just because they have the right to, and i've known many non natives who would happily do the same, but that's why we have laws.

Saying it's a "race war" was an absolutely stupid way to phrase the issue.  He deserves to be lambasted for his thoughtless, bone-headed comments.
