Are you sure that isn`t band? There was a troll with a username called (something)moderator at the Post a few years back that kept sending messages to users that they were band. Obviously an ESL student.

That's a good question, and something I didn't keep track of. So far as I can tell, everyone who joined is from the old site. I think I probably invited ~30 people. I think a couple others may have invited a few people as well.

About the only way to do that is to suggest this place to people that you think may be interested. It would be a shame to get stuck forever at 25.

I won't be surprised if the migration continues. Especially if the moderation remains on an even keel. I think most people can moderate themselves, and if someone does step a little over the line in the midst of a heated discussion it should be met with a word, not banishment to the gulag.

I think I've only really lost my temper a couple of times in my life. The last time was an old man who was honking and swerving his car at me while I was minding my own business riding my bike. I enjoyed having the opportunity to get in his face and scream at him. I had such a good time letting out my rage that I wasn't even angry anymore before I was done yelling.

I think BC is smart but most left-of-centres hate him because he bothers their nationalist sensibilities. Go figure on THAT one... Anyway, he has a lot of knowledge, and fills in nationalist blind spots, which I like. But it's too much USA USA, as you imply, and the moderators could never get on the same page as to how to tag that. He is/was the #1 poster on walking the line with regards to rules. Oddly, he hated MY guts and refused to deal with me as a mod. I suspect it was because I found the contradiction in his value system after years of looking and he took a little snit. It's good to believe in something, and I envy him for believing in his country.

The moderators had criteria that were used. If you think that's bullshit, or I'm lying or that we were all crazy then there is no more to discuss.
If you accept that we had criteria, he assessed it over years and ensured that he could play it back. For example, he was very good at figuring out when he could bring the US into a discussion, usually after a Canadian poster had dropped a US reference into the thread. Or, if not, just doing it so that we didn't notice it.

That's even more nebulous, though, and harder to pick up on. Certain left-of-centre posters had a distinctly snide tone but wasn't objectively discernable by a majority of mods.

He knows he can derail any thread he feels like by trolling easy-to-rile users with obvious bait. And Chuck lets him do it because Chuck is convinced that he's a brilliant visionary.
If I was the sheriff over there I'd have deleted a lot more of that dog-****. But Chuck made clear where he stood on the subject, so I didn't feel like I had any say in it.

I don't think that's fair either. I felt like I was listened to, and we had a few issues pushed back as I recall. I don't believe in the overall philosophy of allowing kooks to post more **** than there could ever be good material. But that's something else.

Ok, I absolutely do not want to lose more people, and I'd like a few of those posters to return.
I'm not talking about anything formal I just need a few level headed members who can provide feedback to me on things that are particularly troublesome in the forums.
How about this... I'll start a private club and then we can invite some of these disgruntled members (the one's that have left) to come into the club and share their thoughts with me privately.
Some folks, particularly those that have left, think I don't care what they think... they're wrong. I want to make this forum a welcoming place for everyone, it's just that whenever there was a particular thread that was started by someone who was pissed off about something (another poster, moderation action, etc) it almost always devolved into a negative **** show - with little valuable that I can actually act on.
If you could relay that message back to those you've been in contact with, I'd really appreciate it.

Thread after thread included hundreds of posts from dozens of MLW members raising concerns - absentee landlord "Greg" chose to ignore those threads; chose to rely on the continuing failed moderation that was at the heart of why many, many posters left MLW... some now present here. All the feedback he presumes to ask for now is present in those threads. Comments from some of the current members here who still, on occasion check in at MLW, suggest nothing has changed in terms of the failed ChasMan moderation. Get stuffed Greg.

Yeah I think it’s too little too late considering he shut down the thread where we voiced our concerns about the moderation and told us all to go find another forum if we’re not happy. That was such a telling moment about what we can expect in terms of improvement for the board.
And why send ‘Robert’ to relay this message? Why not come here personally?

There's no reason to punish people. Really, all of these things are entertainment provided by each of us, and services provided by the moderators. I was positive about MLW, as I was about my issues with it. Eventually, it was time to leave and so I felt that I was free to follow good conversations here.
But I post in both places. If clubs make for good conversations at MLW also, I see no reason to not use them. The functionality is still nascent though.

If he did something about the conspiracy theorist who takes every **** topic and makes it into a 9/11 thread or how evil the West is, and if he did something about the rabid Muslim who thinks Erdogan is the world's saviour and women should be totally covered up (not herself, though, obviously....just other women) continually posts "top secret" insider info with absolutely no sources or cites....maybe. A quick look over there a few times - it looks like a jihadi recruitment board with a few real topics thrown in to make it look legit. I don't know, that's my take on it.

He's gotten rid of the 9/11 guy. Some people like the Turkish girl and her topics, even though she's pretty hard to actually 'debate' with, being prone to ignore those who disagree with her. She's prolific for sure and pretty single-minded, but no more so than other posters.

You might be right. Robert's message said Greg had got rid of him, but I just did a search and he still shows up as member although he hasn't posted since November 10. Cybercoma, on the other hand, shows up as 'suspended'.

To me, she seems just like an immature, entitled 16-year-old girl. But she's smart, and a thinker so maybe she'll outgrow that and realize ignoring people isn't productive and that she doesn't actually know everything or have all the answers. Or maybe she'll grow up to be a female leader in the 'oppressive' style so common in that part of the world. I don't see her commitment to sticking to her own facts despite alternate evidence as any different than many other posters, really. We're all guilty of that to some degree.

Those two might be daunted if you could actually tell them how full of **** they are, but responding with even mild mockery gets you in trouble with the moderation, particularly with regard to the 'turkish' girl. Half the threads in the US section are started by either her or that idiot loonie of the far left who hates America and the West and who can't be told to shut the **** up. When I was 16, I regularly regurgitated Jehovah's Witness crap. Even went door to door and aspired to be a Pioneer, devoting 100 hours a month to evangalizing. In terms of how I spoke to my friends and family, I was.probably as insufferable as this girl. But I changed.
Watched a program yesterday featuring the granddaughter of the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church. She told people they were going to hell, picketed soldier"s funerals, advocated for jailing, even killing gays, for the first 20+ years of her life. Then she realized the error of her ways and speaks on Ted Talks about her experience. People do change. Especially young people.
The Turkish girl abandonned her parent's belief system looking for something different. I think she's still looking. But hey, we can agree to disagree.

As a first step among many, he needs to get rid of Charles as a moderator and he won’t. Charles is an anarchist with a soft spot for gadflies. That’s why he sees trolling as productive discussion. But he’s also a rabid conspiracy theorist, so he’s irrational. It’s this irrationality that makes him inconsistent with the application of the rules. He only sees what he wants to.

I am reluctant to make calls as in actual predictions. Even on election night 2016 I told my companions that I wasn't sure Clinton would win.
I have expressed, however, that at some point one has to pick one principle/value over another and in the case of running a forum like MLW, it came down to 'free speech' vs 'quality speech'. People should be free to enter, and express themselves within limits. At some point, though, you have to show some people the door.

"Free speech" doesn't mean consequence free. That's the issue. Free speech is a principle for good government, meaning the government should not be allowed to punish people for criticizing them. It doesn't mean that you get to spread fear and promote hatred without consequences.
But hey, they'll either figure that out or they won't. I don't care anymore, since, y'know, I'm banned for making it a point to show that we don't control our own content over there.

Well, big milestone for this forum I think:
- I tried googling "Canadian politics message board" and this site now shows up on the 1st page of google results.
- I then tried googling "Canadian politics forum" and we're also on the 1st page of results. Changing it slightly to googling "Canadian politics forum" gets this site on the 2nd page of results.
- "Canada politics forum" and "Canada political forum" gets this site on the 1st page of results.
- "Canada politics message board" and Canada political message board" gets us on the 2nd page of results.
So we're actually at the point where we could possibly get new membership that's not from "the old site", but there's still several Canadian political message boards that come before us in the google results so it may not be many if they come at all.

Ok, I absolutely do not want to lose more people, and I'd like a few of those posters to return.
I'm not talking about anything formal I just need a few level headed members who can provide feedback to me on things that are particularly troublesome in the forums.
How about this... I'll start a private club and then we can invite some of these disgruntled members (the one's that have left) to come into the club and share their thoughts with me privately.
Some folks, particularly those that have left, think I don't care what they think... they're wrong. I want to make this forum a welcoming place for everyone, it's just that whenever there was a particular thread that was started by someone who was pissed off about something (another poster, moderation action, etc) it almost always devolved into a negative **** show - with little valuable that I can actually act on.
If you could relay that message back to those you've been in contact with, I'd really appreciate it.
GIMME A BREAK. Waldo had a great reply to this. We've all tried to give feedback, constantly over the years to Greg and Charles. If they didn't want to listen it's their fault. Greg doesn't deserve any of us going back. I think MH and SirJohn still frequent those dusty chambers, my advice to you guys I'll quote from Kylo Ren: "Let the past die. Kill it if you have to". In other words, don't support a shithole by keep posting there.
I PM'd Greg a few months ago after the above post, I gave him some thoughtful feedback, i didn't mince words, i told him it was his fault they didn't listen to us, and told him to fire Charles if he wants any improvement in the forum. I didn't receive any reply from Greg. So get bent Greg.

Not sure what's wrong with that CA dope, but I'm glad to b out of there.

We worked together here in Canada and then in Africa, South America and Malaysia. We did some shopping and then cooked up a steak and lobster dinner that I can still taste. Then last night he said
"hey have you still got that old Larevie guitar"? and I said of course and handed it to him. I threw a log on the fireplace, and grabbed my basket full of harmonicas and away we went. We "sang up every song that driver knew" until 2 am. He headed back home to Gabriola this am but I swear there are still musical notes bouncing around this house.

Trying to break through what's-her-name's magic bubble stopped being fun for me a long time ago. Taxme is disgusting and ought to have been put down a long time ago.
It's not just a matter of recreation, though. For me, talking with you fine folks is an opportunity for me to hear other ideas and examine my own. I think that trying to explain something to someone else is one of the best ways of understanding it yourself. I really do think that I have learned a lot from my time on these message boards. And expressing myself in writing has been a big part of building confidence in myself as well.

This web site is now over a year and a half old - approaching two years, actually. It has yet to be found by anyone other than residents of the previous group. This suggests to me that it's not very easy to turn up. A google search for "Canadian political forum" does not turn it up at all. It DOES show up if I do a search on "Canadian political discussions" however. I'm not knowledgeable enough to guess how Google assess search results but I wonder if those who ARE might know and have ideas?

Folks - Just to say again I appreciate this forum as it's here when I need it for insights and interesting points on the day's events or life in general.
Please take some time to invite ONE person that you think would groove in this. One thing I learned about culture in the last few years at work (You know how I put 'culture' on many of my subject lines right ?) is that it grows strong if you tend to it - ie. smart people invite smart people, good workers attract good workers, and the body of the whole develops naturally.

On the days I work from home I check out the board throughout the day. Problem is I kind of like you all, yes even Waldo, and I can't be bothered to argue with you.
I'd rather hear about Squid's latest catch, Kimmy's drama with Lindsey, Michael's transition to fatherhood, Wilber's retirement and Graham masturbating (ok maybe not that one).
