Canadaland Podcast
« on: July 25, 2017, 03:09:13 pm »
http://www.canadalandshow.com/podcast/the-summer-dump/

The last half of this podcast reveals that the PM's office put pressure on McGill to fire a professor who had published an article with an anti-Quebec tone.  If you are wondering if conspiracies are possible - they are.  And they happen in full view with nobody saying much more than "meh".

To be clear - this means that the PMO shut down a journalist and repressed free expression.  Imagine if Trump had done that.

I'm not going to bother listening to the podcast, so can you show us evidence (cite) that this actually happened?

I agree - I've heard a lot of conjecture but seen no proof about anything like that happening.  I'm inclined to disbelieve given that.  Most conspiracy theories are just that.

Unnamed sources on the McGill board indicated pressure from all three levels of government as described by the University president.  Also, the writer went into the meeting to discuss the article with the intention to keep his job, and resigned after said meeting.

FYI Canadaland was the core team that broke the Ghomeshi story, so it's not Alex Jones or the Rebel.

Maybe so, but it's also unfounded.

If Alex Jones quotes an anonymous - or for that matter nonymous - source I know it's bullshit.  But Jesse Brown is a great journalist outside the corridors of power.

Jordan Peterson and the WLU case get covered.  I pretty much perfectly agree with them, Bob Rae and everybody in Canada on this.

The interesting angle is that it appears that Universities mostly cave to pressure from the right AND left.

This is about the fascinating global effort behind exposing the panama papers.  It feels like the beginning of a true world community under the banner of this group.

Be still my globalist heart.

The spiking of a CBC doc on transgender children is questioned, and a kerfuffle in Niagara Region (again) about podcasters.  It seems like local journalism is thought to be easy to intimidate by the powers that be.  My complaint, though, is that nobody's story lines up on the Niagara incident and you can't even tell who dd what...

http://www.canadalandshow.com/podcast/need-talk-reddit/

the Canada sub-Reddit has become increasingly infested with white nationalists.

So, clearly the model for these new media - being open source, effectively - comprises a shorter life cycle than nonymous, and tightly controlled old media.  Web boards are difficult to keep in the centre without draconian moderators (ie. like me :) ) to kick out those with unfashionable or unpalatable views that scare the middlecore members away.

Fast, ill-considered and contradictory thoughts from me:

- Screw the middlecore.  They aren't really interested in politics for the most part, just getting enough entertainment, swag and junk-food
- We need the middle because our entire nation was built on the model of a robust middle
- Fringe posters, being mostly anonymous, organized groups that deploy sock-puppets and bots, need to be banned
- Banning fringe posters is anti-free speech and gives a distorted view of the opinions in the community

The important thing is that the character of these sites is being discussed publicly.  That conversation is vital.  It appears that the Federal Government has now given up on its idea of funding newspapers, or at least scaled it back to bare bones.

According to this week's Canadaland... yep... the pipeline approval was rigged and the government has been misleading us about the process.

Interesting review of how Global News local is churned out from Toronto ... sounds like a blast.

https://www.canadalandshow.com/podcast/the-mud-slinging-meme-hustling-rage-baiting-sites-you-need-to-know-before-the-next-election/

Great Canadaland episode.

They break down ownership of Ontario Proud (BC Proud, Alberta Proud) North99, and newcomers The Tangerine and Postmilennial, which are online news sources.

Listen to this to find out how the sausage is made, to use a phrase, in the online media industry.  It's about pissing you off, and getting clicks.  There's even a Muslim fellow who owns a right-wing site and people who own both right- and left- wing sites.  A former NDP worker who manages a right-wing site.

Here's the thing: you care.  They don't.

I shudder to think what will happen if we have violence in this country and have people covering it with subjective points of view, or worse are being funded by foreign governments that benefit from Canadian dissent.  Bookmark this page.

-----------------------

This all reminds me of Argus' posted meme "Hard Times produce Strong Men" that he posted.

The cycle is something like: media that isn't supported by the public needs funding, and can only be funded by partisan entities, so it becomes partisan.  This is how newspapers worked in the 19th century.  Eventually, news became competitive and being more objective attracted readers from all political perspectives so less-biased news won out.  At some point the bland objective news market became saturated and there was a market for FOX.

You're nothing if not consistent.

I stopped listening to CANADALAND a long time ago. The host, what's his name?, just comes off as a stubborn, egotistical prick.

'Comes off' is an admission that you're talking about style,  veneer, surface.

Did you listen to 'Thunder Bay' ?  I think the Atlantic named it one of the top 50 podcasts of 2018.  It went deep into the crazy racism and institutional support for it that that terrible city offers.  And Canadians who are so quick to look south paid little attention.

Get past Jesse's voice and attitude.  This episode will explain what's out there in our media landscape, which is something every intelligent member of the public should understand.

BTW - coming next will be 'fake news' coverage of violence, and that will be truly a dangerous thing.  :'(
