On the rock stations in my city they've started to splice in pop songs (like the Weeknd) into the rotation, as well as pop-ish songs that don't sound very rock-like.  Sad that rock is basically dead, the industy on its last legs.  A young generation now growing up with hardly any new big acts.  Thanks Napster.

I think the demise predates Napster

I recently stumbled on to "the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club".  One might think that with a name like that, they might sound like Molly Hatchet or Motorhead, but they're actually quite different.  Although some of their material is straightforward rock, many of their songs are moody and melancholy. One thing that makes them stand out is that the female drummer provides some wonderful backing vocals, kind of like Nikki Monninger, the bass-player from Silversun Pickups.

They also recorded a cover of "Let The Day Begin", by "the Call".  It turns out that the lead singer of The Call is the father of the lead singer of BMRC, and they recorded it after he passed away.

Pitchfork aggregates music reviews on their aoty.org website. Currently at #6 is a thrash metal album by Power Trip called Nightmare Logic. This shit is right at home with classic Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth. If you're into metal they're worth checking out.

So the piano is pretty dead as a lead instrument in popular music, but it can be a pretty rockin' rhythm instrument.  A couple of examples:

here's one you may remember...

Somebody just posted this on Reddit, and I thought it was too beautiful not to share.  The dancer is his friend, and the special effects are created using a huge sheet of glow-in-the-dark paper and a strobe light.

The music is by a Manitoba band called Yes We Mystic.

Guys! I've received a notification from the CRTC that this thread doesn't meet the government-mandated quota of Canadian content.
STAY TUNED FOR CAN-CON

Vancouver's Prism

Prism apparently helped launch the careers of Bryan Adams (who wasn't a member, but contributed as a songwriter) as well as songwriter Jim Vallance and producer Bruce Fairbairn.

This song was recorded around the time that the original Star Wars was dominating popular culture. I can't help wondering if the clips of jet-fighter comms chatter were inspired by the starfighter assault on the Death Star.

Toronto's Gowan

In the 1980s Larry Gowan had a number of medium-sized hits as a solo artist in Canada, most notably Criminal Mind, which had great video depicting Gowan as a comic-book style super-villain.  Since then, he has become the lead singer and front-man for the current lineup of Styx.

This is classic-rock rock legends Styx performing Larry Gowan's Can-con solo hit live in Toronto.

And this is Suite Madame Blue, which is not Canadian content but it puts chills up my spine each time I hear it.  It was released in 1976 and some thought it was rah-rah patriotism for the American bicentennial, but it was actually an admonishment. "America, I love you babe, but you have to get your shit together."

I agree, they are wonderful, kind of like the olive on the toothpick in the giant Martini that is Canada!

Montreal's Corey Hart.  Ah Corey... whatever became of you?

I could actually only find one Corey Hart song I like. :(   The amazing synthesizer line completely carries this.
