Federal NDP
« on: February 12, 2017, 06:24:01 pm »
Looks like we finally have an official contender...

B.C. MP Peter Julian announces NDP leadership candidacy
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/bc-mp-peter-julian-1.3978889

More will start to come out of the woodwork now that the honeymoon is FINALLY coming to an end with Trudeau.

Julian is promising free higher education for Canadians and as much as I admire that in European countries, I don't think North Americans are ready.  I wish he'd drop that from his platform and focus on the environment.

In Europe access to university is rationed because it is free. Germans can take 7 years to complete a 4 year degree because the required courses are full because there is not enough funding to meet the demand. The last thing we need is free government rationed university access here. I would rather see more grants an scholarships to students going into programs that benefit the economy in the long term.

If only the government had a crystal ball, considering it's practically impossible to predict which programs are going to benefit the economy the most in even 10 year intervals.

More importantly academia isn't in the service of the economy. There's other reasons to pursue an education that doesn't involve being a cog in a machine.

Sure. People who want to pursue education without any thought to the economic benefit should be free to do so on their own dime. If government is going to subsidize post secondary education it should focus on those programs that have a demand for graduates. It should not be subsidizing 20 somethings on a trip to "discover themselves".

As someone with a hefty monthly RESP contribution I like free higher education, don't get me wrong...

But promising free education as an election platform is insane after four years of Trudeau spending.  Especially if the CPC has a strong fiscal conservative leader.

In the fine balance between the economy and the environment, the Liberals have shown that they try to please everyone and nobody as a result.  The CPC will present themselves as the champions of the economy so NDP needs to focus on the other half of the equation: the environment.

They need to outgreen the Greens if they want to get anywhere in the next election.

Free higher education is going to be the nail on the coffin for the party if they try to run on that.

Mulcair is just sitting in the House with a large bong and saying "nah, I'm good" every time it's his turn to speak.

Yeah there is a Facebook group dedicated to keeping him.  I keep seeing it as a suggested group.

I agree, he needs to go.  The party made its choice.

You can get 90% of the same education from a library card as you can spending 20k+ on a university degree, at least for Arts/humanities fields.

My child will never be taking ie: philosophy or history at a uni on my dime.

Well, free university would be a popular voting issue among younger voters.

However, they tend not to be as active during elections. Probably too busy getting high to go to the polls or something.
