More importantly academia isn't in the service of the economy. There's other reasons to pursue an education that doesn't involve being a cog in a machine.
You can get 90% of the same education from a library card as you can spending 20k+ on a university degree, at least for Arts/humanities fields.
My child will never be taking ie: philosophy or history at a uni on my dime.
